Boswell Scholars:  Savannah PRIVATE Group

May 3 – May 6, 2023

Savannah is one of the South’s most treasured coastal cities for its jaw-dropping beauty: cobblestoned streets, horse-drawn carriages, majestic oaks dripping with Spanish moss, and pre-Civil war architecture. Its well preserved historic downtown boasts the largest National Landmark District in our entire country.

Savannah is a perfect segue from the Colonel’s cotton empire as Savannah was the port from where Georgia’s cotton was shipped.  In the 1880’s Savannah ranked as the top cotton seaport on the Atlantic Coast, and the second in the world.   The commanding Old Savannah Cotton Exchange structure is now home to the city’s thriving Chamber of Commerce.  Moreover, with the wealth bought by cotton, many of Savannah’s residents built lavish homes and churches throughout the city.  These buildings remain sprinkled throughout the city today.

It will be necessary for you to travel in your own car from the horse ranch in Madison to Savannah, a distance of 204 miles.  (Note: Cars can be rented in Atlanta and dropped off in Savannah—a car will not be needed once in Savannah.)    This segment of the trip will begin mid-afternoon on May 3.
